Granny Triangles - my way

Many of you asked me how to make the triangles for the bunting in my previous post. Some of you asked if there is a pattern for it. There might be a pattern for it in many places, as it is a very basic pattern. Same as in a granny square, but you work three sides instead of four.
Here is how I make them.

Ch4, sl st to first chain to form a ring

First round

Ch2(Counts as first dc. I always ch2 for dc instead of ch3 because I find it balances the height better.)
2 dc, ch2,3dc,ch2,3dc,ch2, join to top of first ch2

Second round

sl st in the next 2 dc (I sl st in the back of the chain)
sl st into ch2 space.
Ch2,2dc,ch2,3dc.
*3dc,ch2,3dc in the next space*
Repeat *-* once more, sl st to top of first ch2

Third round

sl st in the next 2 dc
sl st into ch2 space.
Ch2,2dc,ch2,3dc.
*3dc in next ch2 space
3dc,ch2,3dc in the next space*
Repeat *-* to finish the round and sl st to top of first ch2.

Repeat third round till the triangle is as big as you want.
Please feel free to tell me if there are any errors or confusions.

I have added small metal bells below each triangle. So now they look pretty and sound very good too!!

Thank you very much for that. It was the body of the Christmas Tree that you used as the bottom bunting that I really liked (well both) is that simple to do? Thank you so much for taking the time to write up the granny Bunting, yours really does look so lovely.

Thanks so much for the pattern. I've been searching for a bunting pattern to adorn my daughter's room. Much pleased and the pattern reads really well. Looking forward to more patterns.

Thanks for the pattern. It made me smile when you said you chained 2 instead of 3, because it looked better, because I did this,in one of my practise pieces, and felt guilty about it, and now I dont!

Hi! I tried this pattern, and I like it, but, mine would not lie flat.
I remembered a trick for crocheting round things, to make them lie flat: each round, increase 1 stitch for every stitch in the first one.
Using this trick, since you have 15 stitches in the first round, the second I made sure to have 30 stitches, and the third 45. In order to do that, I increased the corners to 3 chains, added a chain between the double crochets on the sides, and increased the side dc's to 4 in a space. It worked for 3 rounds, which is as far as I went, and I had a nice flat triangle.

I think I will try making a "granny triangle" mat or pillow cover! Thanks for the pattern!

I came across your pattern and I just love how your triangles look. I tried the pattern but got completely confused on the 3rd round. It started looking like it would be round and not triangular and obviously skipping ch2 spaces makes it curl instead of lie flat.

Is it one of those patterns that tricks the eye and I just need to keep going and not worry that it's coming out roundish? And I'm not meant to skip the ch2 spaces right?

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm going to research other triangle patterns to compare but yours are the best looking I've seen so would really love to use yours. :)
